Details
Theme: Library 2.0 - using Web 2.0 social networking tools (blogs, wikis, feeds, podcasts, virtual reality, instant messaging, LibraryThing, MySpace, Facebook, Second Life etc) in Libraries. The program will be determined on the day by the attendees.
Where: State Library of Queensland, Cultural Centre, Stanley Place, South Bank.
When: Thursday 11 October 2007, 9.30am - 5.00pm (coffee available from 9.00am, post-conference drinks from 5.00pm).
Cost: $30 per person, includes all day tea and coffee, lunch and post-conference drinks. Please advise us of any special dietary requirements on your Registration Form.
Who: Anyone interested in Library 2.0, from beginners to passionate enthusiasts.
Guest speakers: Kathryn Green hill, Murdoch University, WA.

Second Life:
Academic environment - struggle to engage with students, getting them to lectures. Second Life as a virtual space to engage with them?

Onscreen introduction to SL. Possible to do things that you can't do in the real world (don't put a roof on your building or avatars can't 'fly' into them)

Businesses on SL. ABC, Qantas, IBM, etc

Murdoch is in SL, but is not providing library services.

SLQ will be including SL in an onsite exhibition. Will have a virtual presence in SL. May hold events in SL. Smart Service Qld is running a community engagement project in SL - Qld island.

Q: Is it just for entertainment?
A: No - education, communication, etc.

Topic 2: Mashups and widgets

Discussion/Summary:

After some uncertainty about who was actually facilitating this topic, we got started by asking who had actually tried incorporating mashup into their library's websites and what types of mashups were being used.

As a large number of session participants weren't sure what a 'mashup' is exactly, Mary brought up Wikipedia (!) to help explain. A mashup is basically a bit of code that allows you to combine data from several sources and 'mash' it together into a single integrated tool (Kathryn used 'Mashups for Granny?' to illustrate). Looks like we are all very new to mashups!

Some suggestions for possibly useful mashups included:

campus maps mashed with library opening hours
events calendar mashed with campus maps

We had a bit more going with widgets. A widget is basically anything that can be embedded into an html webpage. Some of the widgets being used by either librarians or in libraries included:

instant messaging, i.e. Meebo, which was demonstrated by ?(name please)
YouTube for tutorials
Flickr (and other) photo galleries to hold 'best library photo' competitions
LibraryThing display
Avatars
Polls
Blog counters
(please add more!)

Finally, ?(name please) from the SLQ explained what an API is for those that were unfamiliar with the term.

Most agreed that some of the biggest challenges facing libraries wanting to implement 2.0 content features such as mashups and widgets are:

Council 'roadblocks' - ranging from the 'requirement for all council websites to be branded' to 'completely clueless counsellors'.
too much red tape and bureaucracy to get things off the ground
lack of time
learning curves
staff expense - what tasks must be given up or given lower priority so staff can focus on 2.0?

Topic 6: Connecting with young adults and teenagers using Library 2.0

Connecting with young adults and teenagers using Library 2.0

Discussion/Summary: Thinking about appropriate ways to meet our young clients where they are - on the internet (in the library or at home) or via mobile phone.
A mix of public library, school library and other librarians joined in discussions.
Some points:
Kids in low socio economic areas often don't have internet access, but do have mobile phones. Can libraries find ways to engage with young people using this technology? Some libraries using sms but mainly for notices (overdue or reservations). Who decides (within organisations) which technologies are taken up? Quite often out of the hands of librarians, and controlled by IT or higher authorities.
Discussed a new little device called "hiptops" that enable phone, IM, chat, internet, on a hand held device with a monthly plan. www.hiptop.com Thought to be cumbersome to carry around, but lighter than a laptop!
Using examples, the group explored the pros and cons of MySpace and Face Book as communication tools with young people. Plenty of use of plugins, search bar, and other interesting aspects for libraries. Could we use them to generate book discussions the way that flixter works for sharing discussions on movies? or the way Facebook makes links through groups of friends. (Apparently, we learned, in a later group discussion, Facebook has made a decision to remove libraries and the like, maintaining a purely individual profile).
Because kids who use the internet at the public library are often there for MySpace activity, why not use MySpace as the home page on some or all public PCs. At Noosa Library there is a generic "home page" that provides quick links to the frequently used sites, like Yahoo, Hotmail, Google, etc.
Challenges: YA audience is often quick to change to new things. What's popular now might not be so next month or next year.
Keeping up with the trends is important for librarians. However, when creating a profile for a library, who has responsibility for setting guidelines for use? Use a basic "respect" rule? Set joining levels? Appoint young people as moderators?
Debate arose around the Council (or School) identity V personal (hip librarian getting to where the kids are). Questions about whether the library's image may be damaged by unflattering public comment.
Some schools block internet sites (including access to helpful library resources from puglic libraries!!)
Engaging with young people and encouraging contributions is another challenge (and the main topic of this discussion).
Some ideas: Not necessary to get contributions online. Use competitions - hands on activities such as poetry, to submit to a blog. Use Young people's networks where they are - not essential to be always thinking "interactive online interface"! Hold a youth activity in the library centred around starting a Facebook or MySpace. Get a video camera. Create small videos to upload to You Tube.
Look back at some of the old social networking systems that were good, and why so. Live Journal - fan fictiion role play (eg Harry Potter role plays before the last title came out).

Topic 7: Library 2.0 Sceptics

What do the sceptics say? Corporate structures – standard operating environments get in the way

Too overwhelmed by multitude of tools
How is that my job?
Just tell me which one is relevant today
Digital Divide – bandwidth Filtering Time and Cost – where is the payoff???
Can’t see how it fits into their workflow
They are just groaning
Sceptics don’t step up to learn more about what’s happening out there – what happened to lifelong learning?
Divide between service and systems people – systems staff are not keen to support new services
Innovation fatigue – experimenters get tired of trying and marketing new things
Students seen as wasting their time when they are using popular sites like Facebook, Myspace and chat – concerns about effective utilization of resources and in schools teachers are obliged to make sure that students are on task. Maybe not such a concern at higher education level, where more students have chosen to attend, or are treated as adults who can choose whether to be on task or not
Shifting gears mentally is challenging
Privacy/copyright/ownership risks appear too great for some.
Beta angle is seen as too risky
I refuse to create another web account!
Just as I get to know it – it will disappear
Password management is a pain
Cult of the amateur is seen as dominant and this new fangled web stuff is dumbing down – where is the quality, rigour

Some Counter Points

Information literacy is one of our core services to help our customers deal with content effectively.
We can’t just give up now, because we are overwhelmed with the multitude of new genres and the vastness of WWW.
Libraries have a role in teaching appropriate use and critical thinking about the content.
Role in modelling appropriate behaviour in the web space
Younger generations see this stuff as what they do – it is not seen as just for fun
These are tools that can be used to do your work

How to get there…

Change of culture – director authorises staff to ‘play’ so that they can learn
Stop talking about web 2.0 as though it was play, treat it as work.
Work equity – some staff are doing this in their spare time, but are doing it for work purposes – if this is the case we are demonstrating that this is not REAL work.
Embed the tools into everyday workflows. IM and blogging are just a different mode for carrying out traditional services of communication and information sharing.
Don’t use jargon – so you don’t bamboozle them
Foster support from colleagues, management and IT – educate them about the positives
Think about how to foster curiosity in the workplace again

* What assumptions are being made about staff members and their interest in the technology? Should these jobs be automatically to the 'young grads' because they 'already know it?' This is problematic. It is often the case that it is the older people who are able to be more involved. We shouldn't generalise about age gender and ability.

* Is it a case that is you give your staff the technology and the time to 'play', they will come on board? We think so. People shouldn't have to be focussed on the end product. There should be more emphasis on the journey and learning its uses rather than what can you achieve at the end.

* On going for staff is essential. If we don't make an attempt to engage staff they will 'opt out'. Although, the discussion also looked at the other side of this argument. Isn't it our professional duty to continue to upgrade skills? We know it is tricky to keep up with everything. But we do have to try.

* Web 2.0 is not a tool, it is an attitude (thanks for the person in another session who said that and inspired Rachael.

What is an unconference?
An unconference is like a conference with all the networking and discussion among colleagues but with very little of the formal presentation. Guided by a facilitator, participants create the agenda themselves, coming up with discussion topics of interest based on a given theme. Participants then choose which topics they wish to discuss and join that group. Topics are discussed informally for as long as the participants are interested. Participants can come and go from a discussion as they please.

The SLQ Library2.0 Unconference will include one or two short presentations from guest speakers to inspire Library2.0 discussion.

One Law and Four Principles

According to Harrison Owen and the Open Space Technology methodology, there is One Law and Four Principles which serve as guides to all involved in an unconference.

The Law of Two Feet says that if you're neither contributing nor getting value where you are, use your two feet (or available form of mobility) and go somewhere where you can. It is also a reminder to stand up for your passion.
From the law, flow four principles:

Whoever comes are the right people
Whatever happens is the only thing that could have
Whenever it starts is the right time
When it's over, it's over
